Hog wild on the Fourth of July
During our dinner in Pontiac we met Farmer Lyons, he owns a hog farm 10 miles west of Peru. He said it was a Bike and Build tradition for us to stop and take a look at his farm and his hogs on our ride by his house, so that’s exactly what we did. Farmer Lyons is an amazing man who told us all about his travels to Alaska, South America and he even told us a couple war stories. While at his farm he told us even more about crops. He grows corn, soy, and wheat and most of his seed is distributed to a major bird seed manufacturer. The less glamorous section of the farm held the hogs, and let me tell you this was a very special smell. I could only go into the pen for about 1 minute due to the stench but outside we learned all about how we get our bacon. For Amy’s sake, I wont get into it here.
We had a long ride to Peru but it was July 4th so we wanted to make it special, and we did! Around mile 40 we got onto a bike path that turned out to be all gravel. Once again, this is not an enjoyable surface for road bikes. We knew however, that it would only be a 15 mile ride on the path, so we toughed it out.
It ended up being a beautiful bike path right along train tracks and a river, and once we thought we couldn't take the heat anymore the river opened up into a gorgeous swimming area. One by one bikers kept coming and jumping in the water. It was an amazing cool down. Once we got to Peru we had a lovely dinner and presentation and then we saw the best fireworks presentation that the Midwest has to offer. They really know how to celebrate America out here!
